Singaporean choral director honoured for contribution to Hungarian culture in Asia

Composer, conductor and teacher Albert Tay has been awarded the Gold Cross of Merit of the Republic of Hungary for the promotion of Hungarian classical music culture and the Kodály Concept in Asia

Albert Tay, founding director of the Kodály Academy of Music in Singapore, has been awarded Hungary’s highest award for civilians. It is awarded by the President of Hungary to Hungarian citizens and foreigners for distinguished service to Hungary.

Tay said, ‘It feels surreal to be nominated by Singapore’s Hungarian Ambassador Dr István Szerdahelyi and to be decorated with such a great honour! I just want to give thanks to all of our patrons, sponsors, Asia Kodály Symposium and Studiorum Series speakers, singers from Natus Cantorum, Schola Cantorum Singapore Ltd and especially to the army of volunteers from all over the world who believed in our vision ‘to inspire, promote and bring about better understanding of arts and culture to the masses through the Kodály Concept’. This award belongs to all of you for having stepped up to help us along the way.’

The award was announced on Hungarian National Day, 15 March 2021.
