Dartington Music Summer School Week 2

About Dartington’s Summer School

Four weeks of shared music-making, learning and listening, from early music to jazz at one of the world’s most renowned Music Summer Schools. Courses for all ages and abilities, accompanied by over 70 concerts and events, set against the backdrop of a beautiful medieval estate in the heart of Devon.

Build your own personalised timetable from our selection of over 20 courses a week (costs for one week start at £540, not including accommodation and meals), or join us for one course (tickets for individual courses will be released in March, with costs starting at £135). We offer a range of accommodation, from camping and basic hostel-style rooms to more comfortable rooms overlooking our medieval courtyard, depending on your budget and needs.

Generous bursaries are available for our advanced courses, and the deadline for bursary applications is 5pm GMT Friday 11 March 2022.

About week 2

Week 2’s course programme is a powerful alchemy of baroque and folk music. Laurence Cummings directs Handel’s fiery biblical oratorio Athalia, with our participants singing alongside dazzling soloists, soprano Carolyn Sampson and countertenor Andrew Watts.

Acclaimed violinist Bojan Čičić makes his Dartington debut to lead our Baroque Orchestra, Steven Devine teaches early keyboards, Jill Kemp leads recorder classes, and the sensational young musicians of Ensemble Molière coach chamber music.

We are delighted to welcome new folk tutors Rob Harbron (Leveret) and Miranda Rutter to Dartington, and to introduce The Nest Collective’s Fire Choir with Ben See, who leads singers of all abilities in songs of political protest. There’s also a new course in folk composition, fanning the flame of creativity. Dartington regular Alexis Bennett unearths folk-inspired music from the 18th Century, Elena Riu leads a masterclass exploring baroque music on the modern piano, and broadcaster Andrew McGregor invites us to find words to describe the listening experience.
