The third project in the CHORAL CELEBRATIONS series at the Philharmonie Berlin is dedicated to Mozart’s Opus Ultimum.
The four-day project directed by Heinz Ferlesch, artistic director of the Wiener Singakademie, brings together singers from all over the world and culminates in the performance of Mozart’s Requiem at the Philharmonie on October 1, 2023.
Bärenreiter edition (completion by Franz Xaver Süßmayr)
Mozart’s Requiem deserves a top spot on the hit list of legendary musical masterpieces. The circumstances surrounding the creation of the composition have hardly ever been so well suited to becoming the subject of mythmaking and speculation. However, the work has not become one of the most-performed compositions in the classical repertoire just because of the obscure circumstances of its origin, but above all because it is a great piece of music and because it contains fascinating questions and answers about the meaning of life and death.
Gregorian Chant: Da pacem Domine (Vocal Ensemble of male voices)
Pärt: Da pacem Domine (Stage choir and orchestra)
Mozart: Exsultate, jubilate (Soprano soloist and orchestra)
Mozart: Ave verum corpus (Festival Chorus and orchestra)
Intermission
Mozart: Requiem (Festival Chorus, soloists, and orchestra)
The Ensemble Crescere is CHORALSPACE’s own orchestra for choral symphonic projects. The young ensemble made its debut at the Philharmonie Berlin in March 2022 with the Coronation Anthems conducted by Simon Carrington. In June 2023 the ensemble will perform “Ein Deutsches Requiem” by Johannes Brahms under the direction of Simon Halsey in the Philharmonie Berlin. Ensemble Crescere is led by Donka Miteva.
In 1998, Heinz Ferlesch assumed the post of artistic director of the Wiener Singakademie. As one of its longest serving directors, he has shaped the style of the choir and has helped to build up a program to support and sponsor young artists. This includes not only the development and further training of the choir members, but also the inclusion of young, gifted soloists and ensembles in the concert programs.
