Cantata performance at Carnegie Hall celebrates 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage

Andrea Ramsey's Suffrage Cantata will receive its East Coast premiere in April.

The leading US events organiser National Concerts will welcome the renowned American composer Andrea Ramsey to New York’s Carnegie Hall on 9 April 2022 for a performance of her Suffrage Cantata, an extended work in five movements for SSAA chorus, piano, string quartet, narration, soloists and percussion.

Described as ‘a fresh and outside-the-box modern oratorio’, the work was co-commissioned by National Concerts, Vox Femina L.A. and a consortium of treble choirs, with texts historically sourced from banner messages, programs, speeches, writings and letters of suffragists.

For the Carnegie Hall performance, Sandra Snow, Professor of Choral Conducting and Music Education at the Michigan State University College of Music, will conduct the National Treble Chorus who will be joined by guest soloist and narrator, N’Kenge, heralded by the New York Times as ‘a classically trained diva that can stretch from Broadway, Pop, Soul to Opera’.

National Concerts said, ‘On 9 April, 2022, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Women’s Suffrage Movement. With nearly a century of opposition impeding the process, the creation of the 19th Amendment in 1920 is not only a testament to the unalienable rights that all women should have, but to their perseverance, conviction, and courage. As humanity continues to evolve, it is important that we acknowledge our progress and highlight the historical figures who were in many ways the catalyst propelling us into modern-day society.’

Based in New York City, National Concerts offers innovative performance collaborations for choirs, bands, and orchestras at Carnegie Hall and other renowned venues across the United States. New commissions and premieres are an important focus of National Concerts’ events.

The east coast premiere of Suffrage Cantata will take place 8pm on Saturday, 9 April at Carnegie Hall. Tickets available at www.carnegiehall.org.
